Winter is here and we are all spending less time outdoors. That means it’s more important than ever to keep busy minds occupied and inspired. To celebrate the holiday season, here are five fun educational activities that are great for kids of all ages and can be enjoyed together as a family.

Create an outdoor winterscape: Take a nature walk to find outdoor elements that can be used to create a display of what winter means to your kid(s). Give them each a shoebox to fill. Depending on where you live, this could include things like pinecones, feathers, branches, or even seashells. Let their imaginations take over by not providing too many parameters. Set a time limit and then have everyone glue their items onto a poster board before sharing why they chose each item. While they are creating their boards, talk about cherished holiday memories you’ve shared.

Write about a favorite holiday memory: Oftentimes, these activities will bring up lots of great memories from this time of the year. Ask students to write down or draw a favorite memory, and then ask them to read them aloud. If they are having trouble thinking of something, provide them with an even more specific prompt such as, “What is your favorite treat to celebrate this season and why?”

Create gift tags: You can’t go wrong with arts and crafts for any age group. Purchase blank gift tags and let each child decorate them for people they may be giving gifts to. Provide lots of options like glitter glue, watercolor paints, rubber stamps, washi tape, and stickers. If your family doesn’t exchange gifts, this activity can be modified to holiday greeting cards or winter-themed postcards.

Set up a fundraiser: To celebrate the season of giving, have students organize a way to give back to an organization that could use a hand. Ask them who they would like to help and why they feel compassion toward this group. This activity can be as simple as collecting and delivering cans for a local food bank’s food drive or a little more elaborate like creating a fundraiser online for a nonprofit of choice.

Literature scavenger hunt: Choose a favorite family holiday classic book and make a list of notable items in the book for your kids to find. Then, set them out on a hunt! This can be done indoors, outdoors or a combination of both. After all of the items are found, talk about each one and how they played a role in the book.
